'The Quad was lite with thousands of candles to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights'depicting one of 122 cultures represented on the University of Illinois Campus. [ :10]

Hundreds of students line up to get candles to place all over the quad.' In Hinduism lighting a candle on Diwali represents the triumph of good over evil. Every year the Indian Graduate Students Association I-G-S-A holds the 'Diwali Lighting of the Quad' to teach the campus community about Indian culture. [ :19]

'This comes out as an apt moment for us to share our culture with other people and UIUC being the epitome of diversity I would say it gives us a good opportunity to do that.'' [6:46 -6:55] [ :09]
Students of all backgrounds have come out to light candles on the quad.

And for some Indians like Pratim Patil, lighting candles on the quad reminds him of Diwali celebrations in India.

'Like we eat a lot of sweets and special Diwali snacks and burst crackers.' [:09]
And..students can get a taste of these sweets and snacks by purchasing traditional Indian Food, such as gulab jamoo, a cheese based dessert, served with vanilla ice cream.
Celebrated for centuries across much of the Indian subcontinent, Diwali is now spreading the promise of wealth, knowledge and happiness to new communities across the world.
