Funny Girl <\/em>is an American biographic musical based on the life and career of Broadway, film star and comedienne Fanny Brice, directed by Michael Mayer, starring Olivier Awards-winner Sheridan Smith who is known as “an unforgettable star”. Funny Girl<\/em> was captured by Digital Theatre live at Manchesters’ Palace Theatre. It was recorded by Digital Theatre<\/a> during the final weeks of this Theatre run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Funny Girl originally opened on Broadway in 1964 with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Bob Merrill. For the version i watched from Digital Theatre, Sheridan Smith played the role of Fanny Brice, an extraordinary woman, brilliant and talented comic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Sheridan Smith, Funny Girl returned to the stage with passion, pain, and steel. I was surely impressed by her performance and enjoyed very much. Sheridan Smith understood well of the character Fanny and interpreted her life and experiences thoroughly. For rising vaudeville star Fanny, comedy is a mask and entertaining the audience is a way to deny personal pain. I feel Sheridan Smith perfectly matched the comedy and belting vocals and she even made the performance out of Fanny’s real life with her effort in fully understanding Fanny’s experience and characteristics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I like this performance very much not only because of those excellent performers. I like the genre of the play, a musical comedy which made me laugh a lot when I was watching. It has amazing music which helped the audiences fully immersed in the environment and follows the pace of the play. I enjoyed the songs in the play, such as “People”, “Don’t Rain on My Parade”. and those wonderful songs made the play an incredibly great event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stage was also well-designed, which let the performers surrounded by the audiences on both sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
