When I was seven years old, my dad gave me his old Minolta film camera from the 70’s, and he taught me to shoot with it. I still use it to this day. I have also worked with iMovie; my friends and I made a documentary together when we were seniors in high school. To my surprise however, I found this first assignment quite challenging overall.

I chose to shoot the assignment in my apartment, both so I could challenge myself to look at everyday objects in new ways, and so I could familiarize myself with the equipment in a setting I where I was comfortable. I set a bit of a scene for myself; I lit my candles and moved some of my desk objects around. I found a small buddha statue I bought in London, and that became the focal point for a lot of my shots.

Honestly though, the assignment was a lot more challenging than I had anticipated. I found myself shooting and reshooting, especially with video shots, and still not really being satisfied. I was especially disappointed in my night and day outdoor shots- I really could have done better. My hope is throughout this class I will push myself to think more creatively, budget my time better, and steady my hand while I shoot. I also got my first DSLR for Christmas, a Nikon D70, so I hope I’ll become more familiar with the manual settings on this camera, and learn to tailor my shots to various settings.

Overall, I’m excited to expand my skill set throughout this class, in both shooting and editing. I’m looking forward to taking more chances, and I’m ready to see how my work will progress throughout the semester.

My first project video can be foundhere.

I do not consider myself a photography novice.
