Let’s take a look at where we started the semester and where we ended up!
Oh dear, it seems we have reached the end of the semester! I couldn’t think of a better way to end my senior year. I have enjoyed working with my classmates in every shape and form throughout this class. We all have learned so much since the beginning of the semester and every day we got better and better.
'''' At the beginning of the semester, we were assigned a simple task of getting to know our cameras. We were supposed to take pictures and videos that allowed us to figure out how we zoom, pan, etc. This was the start of our great journey. Knowing how to properly work your camera is so vital! This assignment not only allowed me to get to know the in’s and out’s of my camera, but to actually get to know my school campus. I’ve seen different places around here in passing between classes, but I got to see them in a whole new light. After that, we were assigned big kid stuff.
Our photo essay was to reflect the feelings of hope, fear, etc. This brought me out of my shell a bit because I decided to photograph a protest, which is out of my comfort zone. This was so interesting to witness. In today’s social climate, there seems to be a constant divide on all issues and it was cool to see people rallying together to support a cause.
Another aspect of this assignment brought out my creative side. I was in my car about to go to dinner with my mom when I saw the near by water plant was emitting this eerie looking fog
and I rushed back to my apartment to get my camera because I couldn’t miss getting that shot. Before this assignment, I had never had that urge before. It was a great feeling and I was so excited with the results after a bit of editing.
'''' The video package was sort of difficult for me because I wasn’t sure what to do. I knew I wanted to center it around my family, but there is only so much you can do when you have a toddler that it wanting to play with you and not playing along with getting her picture taken. However, I was able to incorporate some scenes from my hometown to get the point across.
Another assignment that excited me was a “How-To” piece I did on making an apron. I love sewing and I both loved and hated documenting the process of making this apron. I loved being able to take my time to get great shots and it made me really think about what I was doing, but I was so sore after the entire thing was done!
'''' Our first assignment that had us interviewing people was the audio package. For this assignment, I went to the nursing home in my hometown. I went around Colonial Manor with a woman from Neighbor Love, which is a Christian-based volunteer group that brings goodie bags to the elderly. It was an eye opening experience and one that I hope to do again. Seeing the patients light up when you hand them a bag with simple toiletry items was amazing.
The second attempt of interviewing people came with the video package. I went to a local
C.S.A. fair in Urbana. It opened my eyes to the world of produce and much more. I was able to see how farmers make their money to continue to provide fresh produce and meat to our community. I got to meet some great people, which is what I love about journalism.
For our final project, we had the mother of all assignments, the website. We were to pick a topic that fit into the realm of de-marginalization and then expand on that topic through a series of all of our previous assignments and then put them onto one website. This was quite an experience. Between working on this project and then multiple papers and projects at the same time, it was a feat. My team mates were exceptional and I couldn’t have wished for any better than those two. We worked well together and fed off of each other’s creativity. The overall website turned out to be a great success.
Overall, I really loved being in this class. I enjoyed getting to know my classmates and the workload was mild yet kept me on my toes. Since I had already taken some film courses, I was curious about what new skills I would acquire and the answer was, “So many!” This course teaches you everything from film to capturing the perfect shot using stills. It was truly amazing.
'''' I’ve learned so much in this class and it will forever be a part of me. Even though we’ve only been together for a few short months, I felt we were a family. We created together, we laughed together, and we grew together. So to my multimedia family, I won’t forget you.
