“Sometimes I feel discouraged and think my work’s in vain, but then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again.

Written by Jackie Dominguez

This past month has been the hardest without a doubt. Today I think it’s safe to say is one of top 5 hardest days in my life. Needless to say, the world keeps on spinning and I need to finish my assignments for the year. When I clicked on the link to the dance performance of Virago-Man Dem, I didn’t know that a performance during this hard time would provide me with a comfort that I didn’t think was possible to have in a time like this.

I would’ve never imagined I would be watching a performance like Virago-Man Dem in my living room, but here we are.

While watching this performance, I must admit that I was a little lost. I didn’t quite understand why the dancers were making weird movements that didn’t go along with the music. I think that’s the beauty of art. Sometimes no one understands because it’s not always for the audience, sometimes it’s for the artist himself. What I learned through this performance is that I as an audience member would not doing my job if I were to not make the effort to at least understand. Sometimes you’ve got to be able to listen you yourself and be okay with no one else understanding.

As I mentioned earlier, today is a very hard day for me. If I’m honest, most of the performance felt like a blur but one specific part in the performance that continues to replay in my head is when a performer sang “Sometimes I feel discouraged and think my work’s in vain, but then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again”. As I have mentioned in class and blog posts many time before, I am a women of faith. However, today is the one day where I questioned my faith. When I heard “But then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again”, I felt the tiniest amount of faith and that is more than enough for me to continue pushing forward.

Today I learned that you do not need to a understand everything about art, but you just have to give it a chance. In one way or another, art will speak to you even if you’re if you’re in room full of silence.
