Filming this was like a visit home. I grew up on a farm and plan to go into agriculture broadcasting, so this story was fun and in my element. It was easy to get the interview because it rained the day I made contact with the Farm Superintendent. (Thanks Mother Nature!) I felt my experience helped me think of shots and helped me to know what was important in the story. You can watch my video'here. Read the lead before, voice over during and tag at the end. Enjoy!

Lead:

The harvest is in full swing throughout the country. The South Farms in Urbana are no exception.

Voice over:

In the weeks leading up to the harvest, farmers were worrying about their yields after the cool weather during July. However, once they got into the field, many found that yields are doing well. Farm Superintendent, Robert Dunker, says this is welcomed after last year’s drought.

“The grain was able to fill out a lot better than I thought it would given the moisture conditions that we had in August,” (said Dunker.)

Now that yield numbers are in the back of their minds, the race against the clock has moved to the forefront. They are waiting for moisture content to lower so they don’t have to pay as much in drying costs, which takes time.

Tag:

At the South Farms, yields have been coming in at 170-200 bushels per acre for corn and 50-60 bushels per acre for soybeans.
