I’ve held a camera before. I’ve taken pictures before. I’ve taken videos before. But I knew from the beginning of this class that nothing could have prepared me for holding a camera steadily, taking a textured photo, or timing a zoom. And on top of all of that, I had to learn for the very first time how to accurately piece different photos and videos together in a single detailed project video. To say that I was a little overwhelmed is an understatement.
Fortunately, I was not alone in this adventurous assignment.
My first issue came from the actual rubric itself because I couldn’t understand some of its words. I had no idea what some words meant, like padding, textured, and wide-medium-tight shot. Luckily, I had three really great friends to help me out. My first friend goes by the name of Google. He’s a bit of a know-it-all, but he’s really useful and comes in handy most of the time. That guy showed me some sample photos and videos that I could learn from. My other two friends are a bit more … human. Elise and Haoyuan took this class last semester, so I know I’ll have to rely on them sometimes as I journey through this multimedia adventure. They are like my own Gimli and Legolas! My very own Ron and Hermoine! For this assignment, they went over my photos and videos and gave me the final OK.
My next issue involved the equipment.'I’m borrowing Elise’s memory card to save some money, but it, and my new media card reader, were being a big pain at the beginning of class. Neither wanted to cooperate with me. Unfortunately, I didn’t think it through and ended up calling for Professor Collins’ help without going through any other plan. It turns out that I just had to plug'the'USB into the hard drive instead of the monitor. My issue wasn’t necessarily with the actual equipment; rather, the issue was ME! I didn’t try any back-up plan or anything. I just immediately ran to the professor for help even though the solution was so simple and obvious. I need to learn to stand on my own two feet. I need to figure things out on my own, at least for a little bit.
My final issue was actually with writing this blog. Some kind of error occurred when I clicked “Save Draft,” and everything I had spent 20 minutes writing was gone. Forever. Gone. Never to come back. Despite Professor Collins’ best effort, I could not recover from this tragic loss. As a result, I had to rewrite everything all over again for another 20-30 minutes. It was … frustrating. But I sucked it up and rewrote my entire post again. These things happen, and I should be grateful that it wasn’t my video that was erased! That would’ve resulted in tears.
All in all, I’m not surprised that there were some problems.'Something similar happened to'Alicia'Lee because in her experience, she ended up having to retake all of her photos and videos, which must’ve been miserable to say the least. These kinds of things always happen. Alicia was able to continue on after that little incident, so I should too! The most important thing to remember is that you should be prepared for anything but there’s no way you can'ever be prepared for everything.
